Learning objectives of the refresher course:
To learn about the IAEA safety standards applicable to management of NORM residues, in particularly:
- To understand origins and characteristics of NORM residues,
- To under IAEA Safety Standards that are relevant to safety of NORM residues management
- To understand regulatory infrastructure and graded approaches that apply to management of NORM residues
- To understand strategic options and approach for NORM residues management.
Summary:
The aim of the refresher course is to provide participants an overview of the IAEA Safety Standards No. SSG-60 Management of Residues Containing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material from Uranium Production and Other Activities (2021). This Safety Guide provides recommendations on establishment of an appropriate regulatory framework for management of NORM residues in an integrated manner and using a graded approach. This Safety Guide also elaborates on roles and responsibilities, options for management of NORM residues, long term safety of NORM residues, and exemption and clearance.
This course includes three sections:
- Overview of IAEA Safety Standards No. SSG-60 Management of Residues Containing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material from Uranium Production and Other Activities
- Application of Graded Approach for Management of NORM
- Discussions
